NOT ALL LED LIGHTS ARE CREATED EQUAL!The growing popularity of LED lights has resulted in a wide variety of manufacturers pumping out products at greatly varied quality and price levels. But buyer beware -- there are great disparities in the quality of the LEDs used and in the engineering and design of the light itself. It is extremely important when you buy an LED aircraft light to consider several things prior to making your selection and to become an educated consumer. An educated consumer will know to consider and compare: 1) Expected Lifetime and Performance. LED lights last 50,000 hours or longer if they are made from high-quality LEDs. The output of the light, measured in lumens, will decline very slowly with high-quality LEDs, thus increasing their reliability and postponing their mortality. The LED itself is a highly complex package that must be intensely designed and assembled to achieve a long lifetime of peak performance. Anything less than the best from Philips or CREE will simply not provide proper performance or chromacity to even meet aviation standards over the lifetime of the light.
2) Warranty. If a company is making a properly engineeered light, it should be willing to stand behind it and provide you with a meaningful warranty. With a LED life expectancy of 50,000 hours, no high-quality LED light should fail before the airplane itself is permanently mothballed as planes normally fly only a few thousand hours in their entire lifetimes -- so there is no reason why a company would not offer an aircraft lifetime warranty like ONLY AveoEngineering does.
3) Optics. The optical requirements for aircraft lighting are very strict and exacting, as shown in this graphic illustration of strobe candela requirements. To meet them, it requires proper engineering and optical software for proper ray-tracing. AveoEnginering is a division of Strojkov Engineering, the premiere engineering design firm in Central Europe with numerous multi-national companies as clients for nearly a decade.
4) Design and Construction. Aircraft lights need to operate in a wide range of temperatures: from freezing cold at altitudes or in northern climates to extremely hot tarmac situations in warm climates. They also are subjected to extreme weather conditions, such as typhoon rains, sleet and hail. In addition the lights are vulnerable to damage from collisions with hangars, vehicles, and similar accidents. Thus there are two extremely important aspects to aircraft light construction that need to be considered: first is breakability from hailstones and accidental collisions with other objects; second is moisture and condensation penetration... which can lead to electrical failures and freezing damage. You shouldn't need to be worrying about when your light will short out, fail or break.... AveoEngineering offers the only unbreakable lights with free replacement warranty in the entire industry. Aveo lights are completely encapsulated in the special Aveo Diamidium? material, which offers an operating range of -85o C. to + 200o C! Completely sealed and impervious to moisture and condensation, and tested thoroughly to the DO-160 environmental requirements which include moisture and water penetration tests, the Aveo lights will not suffer the same problems of other aviation lights made with external plastic lenses as shown here, (pictures taken at the 2009 Oshkosh EAA AirVenture show grounds). Manufacturers may use a myriad of reasons to explain moisture penetration failures, but the bottom line is still the same, without complete encapsulation there is no guarantee against moisture-caused catastrophes.
Below you can see some Aveo E-Series lights from aircraft displays at the same Oshkosh show, under identical weather conditions, which completely demonstrates the result of experience and engineering at Aveo. No moisture; no moisture-related issues.
Aveo produces a full line of marine lights under the AveoShark? brand name, and these lights meet all the submersibility test standards, and it is this marine experience that leads to the impervious-to-moisture designs only available from AveoEngineering.
